Walk of Modern Art in Salzburg

Between the churches, venerable palazzi and spruced up merchant houses of Salzburg’s old town, contemporary art stands, often where you don’t expect it and where it wants to be discovered.
12 works by renowned international artists combine to form a tour of the city, the Walk of Modern Art.

Where art and history meet

An igloo made of numbers by Mario Merz, hidden in the forest of Mönchsberg.
A cube by Anselm Kiefer on Max Reinhart-Platz, next to Erwin Wurm’s cucumbers in the Furtwänglergarten, James Turrell’s “Skyspace” next to the Museum der Moderne, a space that changes its face with the light of the day.
Or Stefan Strahlhol’s golden ball “Sphera” with the mysterious man on it and his counterpart in the Toscaninihof.
What do the works of art have to do with the place?
What are they reacting to?

White, curved neon lights create a reflective, artistic illusion.

Brigitte Kowanz’s contribution is a memory of the forced laborers of the Nazi era who built the bridge that was given to her for use.
The artists themselves chose the place where they wanted to realize their work.
That’s why none of the works look as if they were presented.
Each one is where it belongs because its idea is connected to the place.

The “Walk of Modern Art” was initiated by art-loving people who came together in the “Salzburg Foundation”.
Blaue Gans owner Andreas Gfrerer was a member of the board.

Very close to us, in Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse, Jaume Plensa’s “Awilda”, an oversized portrait of a girl made of twenty white marble slabs, seems to float out of the ground.
Some will pass by it carelessly.
Anyone who takes a closer look will find a work that remains enigmatic and invites reflection.
