The certainty of being in the right place.
If a hotel hangs pictures whose distinguishing feature is that they are invisible… then it would be better not to hang pictures at all. As we all know, art is a matter of taste, but the only thing worse than bad art is art that wants to please everyone.
Having art like this in my room makes me feel almost insultingly undervalued. A complex, enigmatic work of art, on the other hand, challenges me, provokes me, lures me out of my reserve – and gives me the certainty that I am in the right place, where I am taken seriously as an art viewer, i.e. as a guest.
