Archaeology

Down to the beginning.
Excavating a cellar on ground steeped in history is a journey through time. In 2012 we expanded the Blue Goose downwards by 150 square meters, towards the center of the earth. Ulrike Hampel was the head of the archaeological excavation, which is required for soil extraction in the old town. The soil is the book in which she can read the history of a place.
“The fact that Salzburg stands on top of the Roman city and was probably always in the same place throughout the Pre-Middle Ages and since the Early Middle Ages means that there is a lot going on underground here,” says Ulrike Hampel.

The spectrum of finds therefore spanned all eras. Objects from the Roman period and the Middle Ages, coins, a brooch, some things from the 15th and 16th centuries, tiles from the 19th century. Uli’s excavation team was able to determine the origin of some of the terracotta shards based on their ornamentation. They come from Calabria!
Salzburg and the south, a relationship that has lasted thousands of years! It is always awe-inspiring and gives you goosebumps to stand in front of the layers of history.
Uli grabs her shovel with a firm grip. She now has to move on, to the next rendezvous with the past.
